Science 🧬

Hi there! Today I’ll be sharing another set of earth and science terms. In Earth and Science., there were beautiful terms and I’m sure you learnt something new. Wink wink. Sharing things that I learn makes me happy amongst other things. View Randoms for other things that make me excited. Let’s get down to today’s terms shall we?

D

Dust Bowl : the dust bowl is an area of Great Plains that was greatly affected during the drought of the 1930s. The great plain includes Texas, Oklahoma,Kansas,Colorado and New Mexico. The dust bowl was caused by abnormal sea surface temperature (SST).

Dune : A dune is a ridge of sand created by the wind.

Doppler Effect: the Doppler effect is the change in the apparent frequency of a wave as observer and source move towards or away from each other . Waves emitted by an object traveling toward an observer get compressed which prompts a higher frequency, as the source approaches the observer, And vice versa.

Dripstone : a dripstone is the form of calcium carbonate formed in stalactites and stalagmites. It is also called a speleothem.

Distributary : a branch of a river that flows away from the main stream, and does not rejoin it. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary

E

Eclipse : the eclipse is a situation wherein one celestial body covers another . Celestial bodies include the sun, moon, and other planets .

Equinox: this is when the earth’s equator passes through the center of the sun. It occurs yearly. Equinox 2020 would occur on Tuesday, 22nd September 14:30 West Africa time .

Eruption : this is the sudden occurrence of a violent discharge .

Earthquake: this is a sudden release of energy from underground movement along a fault plane.

F

Fossil : fossils are remains of a plant or animals from a past geological age. Examples include shells, bones, exoskeleton, imprints of animals, DNA remnants etc.

Fluid : this is a continuous amorphous matter that tends to flow.

Fundamental particle: this is a particle that is less complex than an atom. An electron is a fundamental particle which forms a diffuse cloud of negative charge around an atom.

That’s it for today beautiful people. I really hope you learnt something new! See you Thursday !

  1. Thanks for the science lesson and the gorgeous picture. I heard that the way farmers tilled their fields back them contributed to the dustbowl in the 1930’s . Is that true.
